Doug Phillips Takes on Harry Potter

If you haven't read Doug's latest newsletter on why we should stand firm against letting our children read Harry Potter, you can read it here. It was a very thought-provoking article, which I will be sharing with my children. Doug draws the line between good and evil quite clearly. I found the Bible verses discussing witchcraft to be extremely helpful:
Witchcraft is declared to be an abomination (Exodus 22:18; Deuteronomy 8:9-12; 1 Samuel 15:23; Isaiah 8:19-20). Those who practice it are in rebellion against God (1 Samuel 15:23) and were subject to the death penalty (Exodus 22:18). They will not inherit the kingdom of heaven (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21), are detestable to the Lord (2 Kings 21:6; Micah 5:12; Isaiah 47:12; Ezekiel 13:18,20; Acts 8:11-24; Leviticus 20:27; Exodus 7:11; Revelation 9:21; 22:15), and will be cast into the burning lake of fire (Revelation 21:8).

I found his argument convincing, except for one obvious point. The witchcraft denounced in scripture is one of communicating with the dead. As far as I remember. The witchcraft in Harry Potter books is magic wand and flying broom stuff, nothing mentioned in scripture. I think that makes a difference.

Deuteronomy 18:9-14
10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you. 13 You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed such for you.

Couldn't agree with you more Mrs Happy Housewife. Witchcraft includes magic and flying broom stuff, anything which isn't of God is an abomination including consulting with the dead. The thing about Harry Potter is that the demons in it are actually real ones which is a very scary thought. It's nice to see someone else out there apart from me believes Harry Potter is bad news. btw I came here through Mrs Darling's blog...
