"This is Just to Say"

Julana has a lovely William-Carlos-Williams-esque poem that I think only a blogger can appreciate.

Count Your Blessings

This morning I have the song "Count Your Blessings" stuck in my head. At least it is a nice song. It is one of the songs the children and I are learning for school this year. Believe it or not, I had never heard it before this year. I was listening to BBN and cleaning house one day when they played "Count Your Blessing." I later looked it up on CyberHymnal to learn the words. I suppose it is intended for children but it contains more spiritual truth than many of the songs I learned in Sunday School class. The lyrics are encouraging to me - especially when I feel sad or depressed or, as Anne Shirley would say, in the Depths of Despair. While I sing this song, I try to count my own blessings so this song is my own little prompt to play Pollyanna's glad game. Today, I am very blessed. My children are learning at the kitchen table. My air conditioner is working amidst this heat wave. My husband is at work; he has a job. My pantry is full. The list goes on and on. So, what are your blessings and have you counted them today?

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
